Storyline

Caleb, a 26 year old coder at the world's largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world's first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl. When Nathan rips up Ava's picture, you can clearly see multiple pieces upon the floor, but in the next scene when Ava is showing the picture to Caleb, it has only been ripped in half.Late in the movie when Ava and Caleb meet, as she walks away from the window in her room the actresses legs have not been CGI'd to appear as the artificial legs. Felicity Jones was considered for the role of Ava.
The title derives from the Latin phrase 'Deus Ex-Machina', meaning 'God From the Machine', a phrase that originated in Greek tragedies. An actor playing God would be lowered down via a platform (machine) and solve the characters issues, resulting in a happy ending for all.  Director Alex Garland has described the future presented in the film as 'ten minutes from now'. Meaning that 'if somebody like Google or Apple announced tomorrow that they had made Ava, we would all be surprised, but we wouldn't be that surprised'. Domhnall Gleeson himself played a synthetic human A.I. in the episode of the UK series Black Mirror, "Be Right Back". Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac will also appear in the new Star Wars movie - Star Wars Episode VII : The Force Awakens Caleb alludes to the fact that only Gods can create new life. The three main characters all have appropriate biblical names. Ava is a form of Eve, the first woman, Nathan was a prophet in the court of David, and Caleb was a spy sent into a new land by Moses. At one point Nathan tells Caleb "It's Promethean". Prometheus was the Greek titan that delivered fire to the humanity and incurred the wrath of the Gods, for which he was chained to a rock and had is liver pecked out by an eagle every morning. Nathan routinely punishes his own liver by drinking heavily most evenings. Ava subsequently finishes the job.

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan's latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated--and more deceptive--than the two men could have imagined.Fresh off his elegant work on period dramas “The Invisible Woman” and “Testament of Youth,” Hardy brings equivalent visual propriety and composure to a more futuristic mood piece, while composers Ben Salisbury and Portishead frontman Geoff Barrow contribute a bristling electronic score that swarms and simmers with the characters’ own emotional surges. Given Barrow’s presence, one half expects the film to close with his band’s signature hit “Glory Box,” the key refrain of which — “Give me a reason to be a woman” — would aptly sum up its hybrid heroine’s own state of mind.
